Each year, the United States makes the path to immigration a bit wider by providing a unique chance called the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery or the Green Card Lottery. The program, run by the Department of State in the U.S., lets people from countries that see little immigration to the U.S. have the opportunity to get a Green Card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program was launched under the 1990 Immigration Act. The objective is easy but effective: each year, up to 55,000 Green Cards are given to people from countries that have sent less than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selected winners and their immediate family members are granted lawful permanent residence and the chance to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eligibility Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two conditions must be met in order to enter the DV Lottery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.<\/strong> Country where I was born:\u00a0<\/strong>You are not eligible if you are not born in an eligible country. The U.S. releases a list of nations each year that are ineligible for the diversity visa, often because they have a high rate of immigration to the U.S. Such places include India, Mexico, China and the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2.<\/strong> Any formal education or job training is required: <\/strong>At least either a high school education or two years working in the past five years in a job that takes two years to learn is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When and How to Apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In early October, the entry period begins and lasts about a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
