Each year, the United States makes the path to immigration a bit wider by providing a unique chance called the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery or the Green Card Lottery. The program, run by the Department of State in the U.S., lets people from countries that see little immigration to the U.S. have the opportunity to get a Green Card.
What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?
The program was launched under the 1990 Immigration Act. The objective is easy but effective: each year, up to 55,000 Green Cards are given to people from countries that have sent less than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the last five years.
Selected winners and their immediate family members are granted lawful permanent residence and the chance to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely.
Eligibility Criteria
Two conditions must be met in order to enter the DV Lottery.
- Country where I was born: You are not eligible if you are not born in an eligible country. The U.S. releases a list of nations each year that are ineligible for the diversity visa, often because they have a high rate of immigration to the U.S. Such places include India, Mexico, China and the Philippines.
2. Any formal education or job training is required: At least either a high school education or two years working in the past five years in a job that takes two years to learn is required.
When and How to Apply?
In early October, the entry period begins and lasts about a month.
The application for the DV program can only be found online at dvprogram.state.gov.
You won’t have to pay anything to apply for a visa — just be aware of websites or companies charging for this service.
After submission, you receive a confirmation number, which you’ll use to check your status the following May.
What Happens if You Win?
Just winning the lottery isn’t enough to get a Green Card. Let’s move on to what you should do next.
1. Complete Form DS-260 (for Immigrants Seeking a Visa).
2. Make sure you prepare for your interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
3. Donors must undergo a health check and give the documentation needed.
4. As soon as your application is approved, you get your visa and move to the U.S. as a permanent resident.
Keep in mind, winners must complete the process before the fiscal year ends (September 30) — or they lose their chance.
How to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Position
Applying soon after the entry period opens will speed up your process.
Review all your data carefully, since wrong or fake images might exclude you from the contest.
Keep your confirmation number handy, since you won’t be able to check your application status if you lose it.
Just apply once per person, as further applications will result in your disqualification.
